īeginning in 1940, Rising Sun School of Aeronautics of Coatesville performed primary flight training at the airport under contract to the Air Corps. World War II use ĭuring World War II the United States Army Air Forces used the airport as a First Air Force training airfield. On June 20, 1940, the airport's weather station became the official point for Philadelphia weather observations and records by the National Weather Service. Not much changed until the early 1970s, when runway 4 was closed and 9R opened with 10,500 feet (3,200 m). In 19 the airport had runways 4, 9, 12 and 17, all 5,400 feet (1,600 m) or less. Once Philadelphia's terminal was completed (on the east side of the field) American, Eastern, TWA, and United moved their operations here. The site was dedicated as the "Philadelphia Municipal Airport" by Charles Lindbergh in 1927, but it had no proper terminal building until 1940 airlines used Camden Central Airport in nearby Pennsauken Township, New Jersey. It has very high ceilings and feels airy and spacious. The lounge is crescent-shaped and hugs one of the outer walls of the terminal. Entire families, including young children, dominated the larger tables so I moved away from the main entrance and installed myself next to the outer wall, which was quieter. The lounge was incredibly busy, with guests jostling for space. After presenting my card and boarding pass, I entered the lounge. A branded glass elevator whisked me upwards to the reception area. The Centurion Lounge in Miami is located on the fourth floor of the D concourse. On a recent trip through Miami International Airport, I was able to enjoy this perk firsthand and see how Centurion compares to other lounges. But in recent years, it began opening its own Centurion Lounges for platinum card holders. American Express has long offered airport lounge access through the Priority Pass program.
