Tickets: $105, $74, $59, $43, Crystal Willis 0 Bryan Abrams Leaves Color Me Badd and Brings Awareness to National Recovery Abrams to Focus Long-Awaited Solo Career on Bringing Awareness to National Recovery and Celebrating His Third Year of Sobriety With: Color Me Badd, Salt-N-Pepa, All- 4-One, Rob Base, Color Me Badd, Coolio, Tone Loc and Young MC “Someone said that I slept with over 500 women,” says Calderon. “This is rock hard muscle,” he says with a laugh. If anything has been written wrong about the band, Abrams says it that he’s overweight. Mark just came back from New York and said people were wearing overalls with one strap undone just like we did in the ‘90s.” “It’s been fun watching this whole cycle come around,” says Abrams. “You’re like part of the soundtrack to people’s lives.” “You don’t really know how many lives you touch,” says Calderon. But it’s cool seeing the next generation – people our age bringing their kids out.” “ ‘Old school’ was something different when we were younger. “It’s kind of cool being considered ‘old school’ now,” says Abrams. That gave us the opportunity to just relax and raise our kids.”Īnd the group’s fans raised families as well. “We never sold our publishing, so when things were slow here comes ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ and ‘No Strings Attached’ and ‘Don’t Mess With the Zohan’ (all movies that used ‘I Wanna Sex You Up’ in their soundtracks),” says Abrams. The song also showed up in television shows and movies. I just heard ‘I Wanna Sex You Up’ on an elevator in Macy’s.” “I always heard the songs on radios and in elevators. While both are happy to be busy again, they say the songs never went away. We don’t make the money we used to, but our kids are grown and we go back out.” “You have your ups and downs, but we were dads and we were raising kids. “It’s just like anybody else,” says Calderon. “Would we turn that down again,” says Calderon to Abrams. “When that first big tour was over, they offered us a million dollars to tour China and we ended up turning that down,” says Abrams. When Color Me Badd was hot in the 1990s, say Abrams and Calderon, the band was always on tour, sometimes even during the holidays. The group’s other hits included “I Adore Mi Amore,” “All 4 Love,” “Thinkin’ Back,” “Slow Motion,” and “Forever Love” and the act became a popular concert draw. “We were young and we had no idea what we were doing. “When we recorded these songs we had about three weeks to write them,” says Calderon. Even before it was released, the band’s song “I Wanna Sex You Up” landed a spot in the 1991 movie “New Jack City.” In 1990, the group signed with Giant Records and recorded a debut album. After spotting Jon Bon Jovi at a movie theater, the group sang a song for him and Bon Jovi invited the group to open his next night’s concert. They formed a group in 1985 and over the next four years the group found a manager and moved to New York and began opening for larger acts. “We’ve toured with a lot of these artists and know them and then Mark and I have known each other since we were kids.”Ĭalderon and Abrams, along with Sam Watters and Kevin “K.T.” Thornton met at Northwest High School in Oklahoma City in the mid-1980s. “It’s like a family reunion,” says Abrams. The artists represent some of the most popular pop, rap and R&B artists of the decade. “I have guys coming up to me and saying, ‘You need another song like that first one! I got lucky so many times to that!” says Calderon, chuckling in a joint phone call with Abrams.Ĭalderon says he and Abrams regularly have couples tell them that they played Color Me Badd songs at weddings and at other important times in their lives, too, though.Ĭalderon and Abrams are the two founding members of Color Me Badd, which is currently on tour with the “I Love the ‘90s” tour, which also features Salt-N-Pepa, All-4-One, Rob Base, Color Me Badd, Coolio, Tone Loc and Young MC. They could, in fact, be partly responsible for many children conceived in 1991 when Color Me Badd’s song “I Wanna Sex You Up” was at the top of the charts. Mark Calderon and Bryan Abrams of Color Me Badd have a lot to answer for.
